Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Grand Prix 2023: A Race to Remember
The Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Grand Prix 2023 was held on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the Singapore Street Circuit. This thrilling Formula 1 race captivated fans from around the world as drivers battled it out on the challenging street circuit. Carlos Sainz, driving for Ferrari, emerged victorious in this race, marking his first win of the season. Sainz’s impressive performance broke Red Bull’s winning streak and showcased his skill and determination on the track. Max Verstappen’s winning streak ends at 10 races and Red Bull’s at 15, both F1 records.
With badly worn tires, Sainz held on to win his second career race in F1 ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. In an effort to win on fresher, faster tires, Mercedes took a risk with a second stop for both cars. Russell dropped to fourth, ahead of Hamilton, and they both passed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc but could not beat Norris to claim second place.
Despite failing to hold off Mercedes cars on older tires, Leclerc finished fourth, ahead of Verstappen, who finished fifth. The champion had a memorable race after starting 11th and briefly second on track behind Sainz, but only because almost all other cars stopped for fresh tires. Verstappen fought back through the field from 15th after his own pit stop.
With seven races left, Verstappen has 151 points over Perez despite his worst result since Nov. 2022.
Despite qualifying 18th for McLaren, Pierre Gasly was sixth, Oscar Piastri seventh, and Perez eighth. AlphaTauri’s rookie Liam Lawson scored his first points in ninth. It was his third career race in Formula One since replacing Daniel Ricciardo in mid-season, and his best result of the season. Haas’ Kevin Magnussen finished 10th.
