Eastern Europe is a lot closer than it used to be, or at least it feels that way now that many of the Eastern European countries have joined the EU. And that also means that we now have a whole selection of ”new” travel destinations to choose from. Being a member of the EU somehow reassures us that these countries are perhaps not as unfamiliar as they once were, and gives us a feeling of greater security. Here, you can read about these additions to our portfolio of exciting destinations including old favorites such as Poland and “newer” ones such as Georgia.
Europe and the EU have virtually become a second identity for many Europeans, exerting a considerable influence on our lives, daily routines, and future.
Both Western and Eastern Europe have a number of fantastic travel destinations to choose from, each with something unique and special to offer, and only relatively few travelers have visited them all.
There are still undiscovered ”pearls” waiting to be discovered in Eastern Europe, little countries and larger ones such as Montenegro or Croatia, or even more well-established destinations such as Poland. Sometimes the best travel experience of all is just around the corner and is easy to visit on a short break or, of course, a longer vacation. So let´s take a look at some of them.
Geographically, Europe is neither the largest nor most densely-populated continent on the planet. Europe has 750 million inhabitants compared to Africa with its 1.2 billion or Asia with 4.4 billion (2016). The world´s total population is now estimated to have rounded the 7 billion mark.
Many people are somewhat surprised to discover that Europe is made up of over 50 independent countries in terms of geography, of which only 28 are members of the EU. Thus, there are a number of countries, like Russia, which are a part of (Eastern) Europe geographically but are not members of the trading union. Europe´s eastern border lies in the Ural Mountains. There are also countries such as Greenland which is not European in the geographic sense but, but belongs to Denmark and, therefore, has a strong geo-political bond with Europe.
