Samnaun is a tax-free ski heaven in Switzerland.
Switzerland’s village of Samnaun, nearly bordering Ischgl in Austria, hosts a large ski resort with 42 lifts (23 chairs, 19 drag lifts) and offers an incredible 1472 vertical meters of run-down. Experiencing it first-hand is the best way to describe it, as you can get some long and fast slopes in a dramatically beautiful ski area. The photo above is a mere preview of what to expect in a Samnaun skiing holiday.
Ski trip to Engelberg, Schweiz
Samnaun is mostly for you who have been skiing for a year or more, cause then you get the most out of the amazing ski terrain. But there are all levels of difficulty. Beginners are also welcome, and if you are a little daredevil, then we will find an off-piste or two for you too. And “black color” on a piste in Switzerland must be taken literally. Did we forget to say there are 60 pistes in total? They are distributed on 15% green, 65% red, and 20% black slopes. You can reach 2872 meters and run down to 1400 meters. It also underlines it is a snow-safe area. Are you also or more into cross-country skiing? Well, cross-country skiing is enough. 48 km in beautiful and varied nature. If you have the board with you or just want to ski, then you just steer to the terrain park and a cool halfpipe. There is something for everyone.
Samnaun is really close to Austrian Ischgl, What does it mean for you?
Ischgl is 1 km away. And St. Anton, also Austria is actually only 15 km, so you are really close to several ski resorts on the same trip from Samnaun. You also have a number of top Swizz ski resorts within reach.
The so-called smugglers route you can read more about in the Ischgl post, but it is possible to ski into Austria, and the locals did that in the old days and transported not fully declared goods back to Austria, tax free products from Switzerland. In addition, Livigno in Italy has had a similar status: duty-free because it is so relatively remote.
