Things to do on your travel to Angola
Rapids on the Kwanza river
Launch a reel on the Kwanza River for the chance to catch one of the 50 types of fish that swim in these waters. Alternatively, get on a boat and fish while you move with the river. You can also rent a kayak and explore the area that way, allowing you to go at your own pace and make a few stops along the way. Observe nature, greet people who live near the banks or walk through the landscape while melting with water.
Kwanza is a large river, with an enormous flow, so the final fall of 5 or 6 meters of the rapids creates a powerful waterfall. It is an impressive image that will stay with you for a long time.
Kalandula Falls
Reach the edge of a quarry cliff to photograph an example of the anger and beauty of nature at the Kalandula Falls. Considered the largest African waterfall in volume, it measures 105 m (344 feet) high and 400 m (1,300 feet) wide. To reach the tourist sites, it is necessary to follow certain routes and directions through the rocky landscape, but keep in mind that some access bridges have been destroyed in the war. When you reach the site, notice how the waterfall fed by the seasonal rains forms a horseshoe shape, which continues to retract due to the incessant erosive power of the water. You can hire a guide (usually a child) to go down to the bottom, where the view and the proximity to the waterfall make the experience much more intense. We highly recommend it on your travel to Angola.
Beaches of Cabo Ledo and Sangano
Nearly 100 km south of Luanda and without other nearby cities, there are the beaches of Sangano and Cabo Ledo. Both beaches are in a bay, have perfect yellow sand and a beautiful blue sea water. These beaches are generally full of expats on Saturdays and Sundays because it is popular as a weekend retreat. The beach has one of the longest stops in the world at 500 meters.
Cabo Ledo is characterized by a long, slow left, which makes it a great place for beginners to surf. It’s a consistent place for surfing and it’s definitely a world-class surfing destination.
Tundavala Gap (Fenda da Tundavala)
Fenda da Tundavala is a huge abyss in the Serra da Leba mountain located just 18 km from Lubango. The mountain plateau has 2200 meters of altitude and suddenly falls to 1000 meters creating an abyss. Looks like someone cut a slice of the mountain. This natural abyss promotes breathtaking views. It is one of the great natural wonders of Angola.
Museu de Antropologia
The Fortaleza de São Miguel guarding the entrance to the bay was built by the Portuguese in 1576 and is the oldest surviving building in Luanda. Altered in 1664, after which it took its current star shape, the fort now houses the Museu Central das Forças Armadas and offers sweeping views of the city below. Other museums to be seen are the Museu de Antropologia, with African masks, musical instruments and native hunting artifacts housed in an old colonial building, and the Museu de História Natural, which boasts two permanent exhibitions in its marine and mammalian halls.
Miradouro da Lua
Miradouro da Lua translates to Moon’s Lookout. Not because it’s a great place to look at the moon (which it probably is), but because it’s a lunar landscape. This unique landscape was created by the erosion of rain and wind. The bright colors of the earth make it even more special. This is right on the main road to the south of Angola, so it’s a great stop to stretch and enjoy the view.
Marginal de Luanda
It is a long avenue that goes from the port of Luanda to the island of Luanda. It was renovated a few years ago and is now the favorite place for Angolans and expatriates to walk or run in Luanda. From here you have a beautiful view of the island but also on the city skyline.
Black stones from Pungo Andongo
Associated with the tribal legends of the native Mbundu of the area, Black Stones of Pungo Andongo represent mysterious and ancient rock formations that resemble various animal forms. Nearby, you can visit a fort of Portuguese colonial days and a scenic waterfall.
Palácio de Ferro
The Palácio de Ferro (Iron Palace) is a magnificent palace built in the city by the world-famous architect Gustave Eiffel. It is not as iconic as the other structures of the builder, but it is an extraordinary piece of architecture.
It is believed that the building was built in France with the idea of transferring it by boat to Madagascar, but instead ended up along the Angolan skeletal coast due to the drift of the currents. The Portuguese rulers who took him to Luanda.
It is an amazing yellow building with refined wooden details and decorative fences. It has recently been opened as a diamond museum.
Quiçama National Park
The Quiçama National Park also known as the Kissama Park is the only functioning national park in the country. It is about 70 kilometers from the city and is a popular safari day trip.
The 12,000 square kilometer park was opened as a hunting reserve in 1938, but became a national park in 1957. Today it is at the forefront of Angolan wildlife.
The animal population in the park is thanks to a Noah’s Ark type operation in which the animals were transported here from Botswana and South Africa. Previously the animal population was rather low due to poaching in previous years.

Resort Pululukwa
The Pululukwa resort is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the scenery and nature. Throughout the park you will find wild animals, zebras, antelopes, Angolan chicken and even ostriches and crocodiles. With 100 acres and remarkable hikes, you have much to explore: wood paths, several lakes, several dining options and even orchards.
Serra da Leba
Serra da Leba is only 50 km from the city of Lubando, although it is already in the province of Namibe. The most beautiful part of the mountain is the mountain pass road with 56 curves, built during the colonial era to connect the cities of Lubango and Namibe.
Don’t forget to go to the Serra da Leba observation point, where you can see the entire image of the mountain, the pass and take fantastic photos.
Ilha de Luanda (Luanda Island)
It is not really an island but a small peninsula. It stretches for 5 km right in front of Luanda and hosts some beautiful beaches, restaurants and bars. Ilha is a very visitable place in Luanda and the meeting place if you want nightlife and party!
Some beaches are within the perimeter of restaurants / bars and therefore more private, others are completely public. The sand is soft, the water is warm and it is summer at least 9 months a year. However, these are not the cleanest beaches and can get very crowded.
Ilha do Mussulo (Mussulo Island)
If you think Luanda has been blessed by the Island of Luanda, wait to meet Mussulo! On the southern outskirts of Luanda, Mussulo is a 30 km long strip of land / sand. The water is even warmer than in the rest of Angola and without waves, so it creates a huge lagoon environment in the sea. To go there you should take a boat from the “mainland”.
Mussulo is so close to the chaos of Luanda, but here you have a completely different and relaxing atmosphere. If you are visiting Luanda, you must come here. Simply perfect for relaxing in the sun and forgetting everyday problems for a few hours or a weekend. It is, of course, beautiful with a long beach, warm sea water and palm trees.
