Few people know that the extremely high-lying country, in addition to containing significant parts of the world’s highest mountain range, the Himalayas, also has large subtropical forests with elephants and other exciting animals and plenty to experience in the lowlands in general.
Here, our posted globetrotter has gathered his own impressions of Nepal from recent travel in the high part of Nepal.
What to see in Nepal:
Annapurna, 55 km of stupendous mountain peaks
Annapurna is a series of mountain peaks in the Himalayas.
The Annapurna massif itself is 55 km long and the highest point, Annapurna I, is 8091 meters high and is the world’s 10th highest mountain and one of the 14 highest mountains on earth.
The legendary Annapurna region is the most diverse and popular trekking area in Nepal. From the full three-week Annapurna Circuit, which stretches into the historic Mustang region to short three-day treks, there’s a trek suitable for everyone here.
As the name suggests, the centerpiece of this part of Nepal is the range of mountains that includes Annapurna I, the first of the 8,000 m peaks to be climbed. Also included in this region is yet another 8,000 m giant, Dhaulagiri, which is located west of Annapurna I.
Annapurna is located east of the great gorge that cuts through the Himalayas by the Kali Gandaki River, which separates it from the Dhaulagiri massif. Dhaulagiri I is located 34 km west of Annapurna I). See the map here in the article.
Annapurna is Sanskrit and means “goddess of the harvest”. Annapurna is another name for the Hindu goddess Parvati and is the goddess of fertility and agriculture.
It is a famous and extremely demanding mountaineering destination. But in the Annapurna area, you can go on amazing, guided trekking tours from 3 days to 3 weeks duration. No better way to get to know the country.
Pokhara
Pokhara is a city in central Nepal, with a population of approximately 200,000. The city is the capital of the Kaski district, and is one of the most popular tourist cities in the country.
Pokhara is Nepal’s number 1 adventure and leisure destination, a gateway to treks in the Annapurna region with plenty of entertainment for individual travellers and their families.
In Pokhara you can experience the excitement of adventure: boating, hiking, pony rides, paragliding, bungee, zipline or simply relaxing at one of the several lakes in the valley.
Pokhara will overwhelm you with its natural beauty and great photo ops. Walk along the shores of the Fewa Lake, enjoy the greenery surrounding you and gaze at the spectacular panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks of the Annapurna Massif. Brightly painted wooden boats add vibrant colors to the greenery, while paragliders float down slowly from above. Flying over the lake is probably going to be one of the highlights of your travel experience in Nepal.
Kathmandu Valley
Experience the amazing valley with three cities, Bhaktapur, Patan or Kathmandu, which house Hindu and Buddhist temples of great beauty. Get an insight into everyday life in Nepal. Buy gifts and memories to take home. Learn about local history and hear the beautiful myths about the creation of the country. Try the traditional Newari cuisine cooked in large wood ovens, walk around the small alleys and side streets on an adventure trip.
Kathmandu City
Founded in a vast valley after draining a large lake, legends abound in this remarkable city and every street has a shrine or two. Kathmandu is an incredibly diverse, historic city with amazing architecture, exquisite wood carvings, and metal craft which showcase the skills of the Newar artisans of centuries ago. Hinduism and Buddhism have co-existed in Kathmandu valley from time immemorial and the valley residents make little distinction as they worship in both Hindu and Buddhist shrines.
Kathmandu is a city where ancient traditions are zealously guarded while at the same time embracing modern technology. The grandeur of the past enchants the visitor whose gaze may linger on an exquisitely carved wooden window frame, an 18th-century bronze sculpture or a spiritually uplifting stupa. Kathmandu, the largest city of Nepal, is the political as well as cultural capital of the country, where Nepalis have arrived from all corners of the country and assimilated.
