Links golf courses are usually found around the coast (see the map) where they have been carefully sculptured in the abundant sand dunes, where the wind often defies players, especially on the west side of the Atlantic coast island. Its designers have also used the proximity of water to make the game more interesting.

Parkland golf courses are mainly inland courses among the natural landscape of hills where forests provide tree-lined streets, which their designers use to take advantage of the competition of the best professionals.

Royal County Down

The best place to play golf in Ireland is a tuff one to call.  Here is a rather sure bet: Royal County Down is located in one of the most beautiful link environments in the world in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Morne Mountains, the links extend along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different view from virtually every hole.
The narrowest street tapes are surrounded by purple heather and golden gorse, so beautiful to look at but so punishing for anyone who can deviate from the prescribed path. The “bearded” bunkers are world famous and stand out on the hanging lips of marram, red fescue and heather. The greens are fast and many are domed, rejecting any shot that has no conviction. This is a true test of any player’s dominance over the traditional hit and execution, the preferred way to play links.
The ninth hole is the most photographed hole in the world of golf. A par 4 of 486 yards, is played from the side of a huge mound to a street about 60 feet below and 260 yards from the tee. From the bottom of the slope, the second shot is played on two bunkers to an elevated green.
The best of all link courses offer a severe challenge for the championships played here.

The Ballybunion golf course

The Ballybunion golf course has a spectacular location off the west coast of Ireland. Located on the northwest coast of Kerry County, on a beautiful stretch of sand dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, you will find two beautifully challenging and unique link golf courses in Ballybunion: the Old Course and the Cashen Course. This is the perfect place for your golf vacation in Ireland. The Old Course radiates a majestic sensation that simply cannot be compared to any other course on earth. With beautifully contoured streets that fall through a blanket of grassy dunes, it is not surprising that these challenging holes have been consistently ranked among the best courses in the world. Renowned architect Tom Simpson added what he called “finishing touches,” recognizing that Nature had created almost perfect terrain without any help. “If pure pleasure is the criterion, then Ballybunion’s Old Course gets my vote as the No. 1 in the world.”

Lahinch golf course Ireland

Lahinch golf course Ireland

The Lahinch golf club

The Lahinch golf club in Clare County has two of the best golf courses with links in the world. Lahinch, one of the many link courses along the Wild Atlantic Way, has played a leading role in Irish golf folklore for many years. Golf at Lahinch dates back to 1892, and unpredictable winds and high dunes have made it a pillar of Irish golf since then.
In 1999, Martin Hawtree successfully re-developed the MacKenzie course, bringing it back to fame, as it now provided the modern player with severe challenges. The change of route of some holes has brought into play more panoramic views of the ocean, which increases the experience even more. Since then it has received a great reception, constantly ranking among the best links courses in the world. It also has two infamous blind holes, the ruins of Dough Castle, as well as a family of goats that roam freely across the land potentially covering your view.
The natural dunes that are around the field offer a fine edge for individual holes.
Lahinch enjoys a wonderful reputation worldwide for the caliber of its courses. It certainly does not disappoint, and it should be a course for all players.

Real Portrush

Royal Portrush is a golf club of great importance. Located near the northernmost point of Ireland, it consists of two championship golf courses. The views over the North Atlantic of Scotland and Donegal are glorious, but golf really is the highlight here. He has regularly hosted the Irish Open, most recently in 2012, when Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson emerged triumphantly.

The best-known course is Dunluce Links, which has been rated as the number 12 golf course in the world by Golf Magazine in recent times. It would be difficult to find a rude one that is more challenging than here, nor one that punishes careless starting punches with such force. Find the fairway and you will find the greens, but therein lies another proof of your skills. The greens are as difficult to judge as anywhere else, but with the right eyes, you can find what you need.
The Valley Links is what you can expect. Played among the dunes ahead, the rough is not easier here. Consecutive features holes present a real test of your skills. The 336-yard par-four sounds short, but the green is full of dunes and bunkers on three sides for protection. Follow that with a three-pair of 237 yards on a partially unseen green, and you will have had real proof of your temper.
Royal Portrush’s stature continues to increase, and it is not largely thanks to its top local winners, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke.

The most daring player will go through the green in one, but runs the risk of finding the beach and a possible ghost.

County Louth

County Louth Golf Course Ireland

County Louth Golf Club

County Louth is one of the best-kept secrets of Irish golf. Sometimes also known as Baltray, this has to be one of the most pleasant links in Ireland and, without a doubt, represents an excellent value. There is no weak hole in the course and some of the holes deserve greatness. ”
The course is presented in two loops covering about 190 acres without two holes in the same direction. The only exception is days 12 and 13 that run along the sea. It speaks very well by the design that there are only fifty bunkers in the defenses of the field, the rest deals with the natural terrain. The 14th hole is considered the characteristic hole, a short four pair that measures only 332 yards, can drive to the green and end up taking six or more, wondering what it was that really made it wrong. This Louth County Golf Club has the tradition of hosting important national and international events.

The European Club Ireland

The European Club Ireland

European Golf Club

The European Golf Club is located in Brittas Bay, County Wicklow, in the sunny southeast of Ireland. It is a club that establishes its own path, with a route of more than 7000 yards. That is accompanied by the non-traditional holes of the 19th and 20th centuries, but these whims are a large part of what makes the European Club such a famous part of Irish golf.
A central element of The European Club’s appeal is the quality of the holes offered. It is home to some of the best individual holes anywhere, as reviews often testify. The exciting land of dunes and the views of the Irish Sea are found in almost every hole, and add greatly to the design. The seventh hole is one of the most appreciated par fours in the world. A powerful straight unit will see it well seated, but the sandy dunes are on the right, with a rough thickness on the left. Your approach should be a good blow, an aspect of your game that will be tested throughout the course. If you go by plane, you might end up looking for your ball on the golden sand beach behind the green.

Enniscrone Golf Club Ireland

Enniscrone Golf Club Ireland

Enniscrone Golf Club

Enniscrone Golf Club is a sumptuous liaison camp in Sligo County. Sitting on the shores of Killala Bay, it is right at the mouth of the Moy River estuary. It was originally designed by the famous Irish architect Eddie Hackett, which gave him instant credibility in the golf community. The addition of more holes over the years has solidified its position, and Enniscrone stands out as one of the gems of the west coast.
The course presented is known as “Las Dunas” due to the outstanding natural dunes found throughout the area. They are believed to be among the most impressive in Europe, and it can be seen that they run along the perimeter of most holes. This mountainous natural climate makes it an ideal setting for a link golf course.
The duel between the player and the course starts from the beginning, with a dogleg test shot from the first tee. The second street is extremely narrow, making it a difficult shot for players of all sizes. However, it is a pair five, so if you can find that street, a low score is probably your reward. Holes three and four are par three and five respectively, so there is an opportunity for a good start, if you can negotiate the dunes. The twelfth hole, known as “Cnoc na gCorp”, is another daring dogleg hit, but it was played in a magnificent setting, surrounded by mounds of dunes and long straw grass. The last four holes are equally surprising, as they show the variety of images in Enniscrone while playing towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Waterville_Links

WATERVILLE GOLF
For those looking for a golf course with top-notch links in Ireland, look no further than the Waterville golf course. Lying in situ in the radiant Ring of Kerry, Waterville is immersed in Irish mythology. The origins of the course date from 1889 and are imbued with a sense of prestige and presence.
The course was assembled by the legendary Irish architect Eddie Hackett, who has had a wonderful contribution in so many golf courses. It is a typical Hackett design, as it presents different challenges in each hole, with a culminating finish ahead. The seventeenth hole is probably the best known in the field. The tee for this par three hole is 250 feet above sea level, giving customers the opportunity to contemplate the splendid beaches that surround the countryside and beyond the Atlantic.

This 500-yard pit is played between large dunes with flourishing straw grass on each side. The stillness that people find when walking on the street is unparalleled anywhere else. It is properly called “Tranquility.” The eleventh hole is “the most beautiful and satisfying pair five of all”.
Waterville is truly a first class golf course. With the caliber, of course, combined with the incomparable sights and sounds, Waterville promises an unforgettable experience. The amazing views of the seventeenth will only make your trip extraordinary.
