Cambodia borders to Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east and southeast, and the Gulf of Siam to the south. Cambodia covers an area of approx.181,035 sq. km. and has a population of approx. 14.8 million.
The capital is Phnom Penh. The city is still full of long avenues of beautiful, old houses, that have been left virtually untouched by the tumultuous events of history that have played out around them. The hard wars that were fought here have left their mark in many places, that´s for sure, yet there is no mistaking the grandeur of past glories that are carved into the architecture of these buildings that cannot be erased. Sprinkled among colonial-style buildings, are temples, pagodas, and remnants of the French occupation – wistful tones of nostalgia, history and cultures, blended over the ages. This country is a fantastic destination that has risen from the ashes to present its beauty in its own fascinating way to all who take the time to look.
Bonus info: Cambodia was the setting for the film Tomb Raider in which Angelina Jolie so elegantly battled her way through this high-action film, shot in nearby Siem Reap, the location of a large area of Hindu and Buddhist temples.
