In 2018, Haneda Airport in Tokyo was awarded third place in the prestigious Skytrax ”World´s Best Airports Awards”, after Changi Airport in Singapore who took first place for the sixth consecutive year and Incheon International (Seoul) – an impressive feat nonetheless, with 183 million nominations from travellers around the globe. It was also voted the World´s Best Domestic airport and the World´s Cleanest airport in 2018. Here are a few facts about the airport.
Tokyo International Airport, better known as Haneda Airport is Japan´s busiest airport and one of Tokyo´s two international airports, who between them handle all flights in and out of the capital.
It is located 14 km south of Tokyo´s central railway station.
Haneda handles almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo, while Narita International Airport handles the majority of international flights. In 2010, a new terminal was inaugurated in Haneda in connection with completion of a fourth runway, giving it both a domestic and international terminal.
This resulted in a sharp increase in the number of international flights to and from Haneda, which previously handled mainly charter flights to Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei.
Haneda currently handles over 85 million passengers a year; it is Asia´s second busiest airport and the world´s fourth busiest in terms of passenger numbers after Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, Beijing Capital Airport, and Dubai.
Tokyo with its two major airports, Haneda and Narita, is the world´s third largest airport system after London and New York.
