Before the unification of Italy in 1861, the Italian peninsula was divided into several kingdoms, duchies and city-states. But the name “Italia” goes back several thousand years. The Greeks gradually began to apply the name Italia to a larger region, but it was during the reign of Augustus, in the late 1st century BC, that the term was extended to cover the entire peninsula as far as the Alps, now entirely under Roman control.

Piedmont (1), the mountains towards the high north: Truffles and best skiing in Sestriere?
We already know Piedmont, many of us from ski holidays, road trips, and wine tours.
Piedmont is located in the northwestern corner of Italy and borders Switzerland and France. The area is probably best known for two things: Skiing, such as in Sestriere and wine, such as Barolo, both are in the top league and can be combined for good measure.
True to the meaning of its name (the foot of the mountain), Piedmont is Italy’s most mountainous region. Piedmont is surrounded on three sides by the Alps with the highest mountain peaks and largest glaciers in Italy. Piedmont also has incredibly good food, including world-famous truffles.
Monviso, the Piedmont side of Monte Rosa, and the other spectacular mountains of the region create the most beautiful landscapes in summer and winter, and ski resorts abound: Via Lattea and Sestriere offer guests winter sports enthusiasts with their state-of-the-art facilities.

Piedmont has some of Italy’s best ski holiday destinations. You can also from Sestriere run directly into Switzerland and in total have a hugely delicious and very high situated ski area.
Valle d’Aosta (2), travel to the north-eastern corner of Italy, and lots of skiing
Valle d’Aosta is a region in northwestern Italy that borders France and Switzerland. Located in the Western Alps, it is known for the iconic snow-capped peaks of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso.

Canazei – the classic ski destination in the Dolomites. Canazei in the Dolomites was discovered by the Danes as a ski destination in the late 70s. Anyone who has been to the Dolomites knows that they are some of the most beautiful mountains in the Alps.

Veneto (5). Travel to Italy and Venice, an iconic, cultural destination.
Venice is located here, and some of Italy’s best wine is produced here, such as Amarone.

Carnival in Venice is one of the world’s most historic and stylish celebrations. Venice Carnival is a world event that takes place in February every year. It is a party at the height of theater at its best, or is it a theatrical performance that merges into a party at its most spectacular.

Here we find the easternmost part of the Dolomites and beautiful coastal towns. Travel to Italy this region goes back a long way, but is not very well known. It’s a shame and a shame.

The author Ernest Hemingway already met Friuli at the age of 17 as an ambulance driver in the First World War. They still love him down there and we love Friuli for all the wonderful things you can read about here. Also about Hemingway.
Friuli, from the canals of Venice to the highest mountains in the northeast Friuli is favored with a perfect climate for viticulture. And there started our interest in Friuli, one of Italy’s 20 regions (See the map above). It was the incredibly elegant white wines that drove curiosity, but there is much more to come.
Liguria (7), does “Portofino” ring a bell?

Liguria benefits from the renewed interest in the less known Italian destinations. It has always been a great place to visit but overlooked. Now we flock to enjoy the sun, the Italian laid-back lifestyle, and beauty. It has meanwhile become one of the Italians’ own travel darling. And if the Italians come there, it is approved. Emilia-Romagna (8). Delicious food and surroundings
We are in the south of Northern Italy, classic Italy with an emphasis on culture and food culture. Emilia-Romagna, which is one of 20 Italian regions, includes a large part of the Poslett in Northern Italy, where, by the way, some of the world’s best rice is grown. The region has an area of 22,124 km² with a population of 4 million. The region is one of Italy’s richest provinces.

Tuscany (9), Italy’s uncrowned wine region, gourmet and wellness destination
Toscana or Tuscany is for most people the most classic place to visit in Northern Italy, but this could become a long discussion, like what about Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, and Veneto?
With exquisite restaurants, overnight stays at wineries, some of the world’s best wine with the Super Tuscans, and a fantastic beach with the EU flag, and Italy’s cleanest sea water, there really is something to look forward to. The two iconic cities of Florence with the Uffizi galleries and Siena with the spectacular horse race in the middle of the city are the icings on the cake.
Tuscany – forever in love, there is something to be said. Tuscany is one of the most popular travel destinations in Italy. It is as if “everything” is bottled up in this beautiful northern Italian province: Direct flights to Rome and from there 200 km to your destination with a cheap rental car.

Umbria (10), As beautiful as Tuscany, just more accessible
Umbria or Umbria in Italian is a mountainous Italian region. It borders Tuscany to the west, Marche to the east, and Lazio to the south. The region has an area of 8,456.04 km² and a population of 882,015. The capital of the region is the university and cultural city of Perugia, where we read a little as young people. Hi Roberto! The Marche region is located in the central part of the country and borders the regions of Emilia-Romagna to the north, Tuscany and the Republic of San Marino to the northwest, Umbria to the west, Abruzzo to the south and Lazio to the southwest, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The capital of the region is Ancona.

Lazio (12), the very center of Italy, and then there is Rome
Lazio (Latin: Latium) is an extremely central region of Italy. Both geographically and of political and historical importance. Its neighboring regions are Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Abruzzo (13), known for its delicious wine
Abruzzo is a lighter southern Italian region. It has an area of 10,794 km² and has around 1.3 million. citizens. The capital of the region is L’Aquila. Abruzzo is divided into four provinces: Aquila, Chieti, Pescara and Teramo.

Abruzzo is known as “Europe’s green lung” because of the region’s incredibly beautiful three national parks, one regional park and several nature reserves.
In a few words, Abruzzo naturally has it all. Wonderful lakes, the Adriatic coast, unpolluted parks, breathtaking mountain ranges, magical medieval towns, all kinds of nature, climate and landscapes: in spring you can lie on a beach on the Trabocchi coast and then walk through the streets of one of the pearls of this area, the town of Vasto, and within an hour you are at the top of one of the ski resorts in Majella National Park. And if you’re not skiing or planning to visit Italy during the summer, you can always hike or hike into one of the regional parks and reach amazing villages (such as Rocca Calascio and Santo Stefano di Sessanio) and panoramic views of the Gran Sasso (Campo Imperatore).
Molise (14), small and delicious also counts
Molise is the second smallest of Italy’s 20 regions. It is located in the southern part of Central Italy. It borders Abruzzo to the northwest, Lazio to the west, Campania to the south, Puglia to the southeast and the Adriatic Sea to the northeast. The region has an area of 4,438 km² and a population of 308,493.

Campania is a region in southern Italy. Its neighboring regions are Lazio, Molise, Apulia, and Basilicata. The regional capital is Naples. Other important cities are Salerno, Caserta, Benevento, Avellino, Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Torre del Greco, Pozzuoli, Aversa and Capua.

Calabria (18), the new and yet so old travel destination in Italy
Calabria is almost newly discovered. The southern province has incredibly beautiful nature, an excellent summer climate, and lots to see.

Calabria is one of the best-known regions locally in Italy and one of the richest in culture, gastronomy and nature, including delicious beaches.
That said, it’s still nowhere near the most visited region in the country, which is great for anyone looking for more undiscovered travel that avoids the lovely but often overrun destinations, none mentioned, none forgotten.
